چکیده

A high frequency ultrasound imaging technique was applied for quality control of several kinds of projection welds originating from automotive production. The projection welds were formed between V-shaped surfaces of solid components and zinc-coated steel sheets. Acoustic images were obtained both in high resolution and in express regime. Detailed three-dimensional data cubes were acquired using a Tessonics AM 1103 pulse-echo scanning acoustic microscope with a 50 Mhz spherically focused lens. The rapid 2D array technique's potential was demonstrated with a Tessonics RSWA (Resistance Spot Weld Analyzer). The data obtained were processed to determine the joint's basic parameters and to estimate its overall quality. The signal processing procedures were optimized for spatial resolution in conditions of multiple re-reflections. Images of C-scans represent the welds nugget's geometry. The nugget's dimensions and crossection area were measured. Several defects (lack of fusion) were detected and classified. The results presented will be used for development of specialized instrumentation for in-line inspection of automotive body parts in an industrial environment.

Improvements in Ultrasonic Inspection of Resistance Spot welds

Resistance welding is an electrothermic process commonly used in Industry for joining sheet metal, particularly steel, in applications such as automobile bodies and chassis assemblies. The method is suitable for partial or total automation, and is very reliable. However, as with any process, problems can occur and inspection is therefore necessary. Although ultrasonic inspection of spot welds h...

Ultrasonic Inspection of Pressure Vessel Construction Welds using Phased Arrays

Ultrasonic phased arrays are a new technology that offers considerable potential for inspecting construction welds. Using electronic control of the beam, phased arrays can scan, sweep, steer and focus the ultrasound. Since welds typically produce defects of known character and orientation, phased arrays can be programmed to optimize weld inspections. These inspections include standard ASME-type...

Ultrasonic Testing of Spot Welds in the Automotive Industry

In the modern motorcar production, more than 300 deep-drawn sheet metal parts are joined together by more than 3,000 spot welds on each car body. To check the spot welds within the framework of the quality assurance, different nondestructive test methods are available in addition to the destructive methods (tear down test, metallographic inspection): the chipping test and the ultrasonic test, w...

In-line Quality Control of Laser Welds of Tailored Blanks by Couplant-free Ultrasonic Inspection

In modern design of automobile car bodies reduction in weight and maximization of the structural stiffness and passive safety are the main challenge. The ‘Tailored Blank’ has contributed to achieve a significant weight reduction in recent years. The single flat sheets are joined by Laser Welding in butt configuration without filler wire. Usually the quality of the welds is assured by precise pr...
